Lightning Protection Safety by TheSafetyMaster™

A lightning protection system is designed to protect a structure from damage due to lightning strikes by intercepting such strikes and safely passing their extremely high currents to the ground.

A lightning protection system included a network of air terminals, bonding conductors, and ground electrodes designed to provide a low impedance path to the ground for potential strikes.

Components of Lightning Protection System

Air Terminal:- A type of strike termination device intentionally installed for the purpose of Intercepting lightning flashes. These items are sometimes referred to as lightning rods.

Ground Terminal:- A rod that is driven into the ground to provide electrical connection to the ground to carry current safely away from a circuit in the event of an electrical surge

Conductors:- The air terminals are typically arranged at or along the upper points of a roof structure and are electrically bonded together by bonding conductors (called “down conductors” or “downleads”)

External Lightning Protection System

An external lightning protection system covers the structure of the building and people against direct lightning strikes.

1. The Air terminals fixed to the structures will intercept the lightning strike

2. The intercepted strike will then be discharged to the ground using the down conductor system.

3. The discharged lightning current will be distributed to the ground using the Earth Terminals

Internal Lightning Protection System

An Internal lightning protection system is a surge protection system that helps in guarding the equipment connected to electricity against lightning.

1. Surges caused by lightning and switching operations are responsible for a large number of occurrences of damage to electronic equipment.

2. In general, overvoltages first damage the most sensitive section of an electronic system.

3. In the case of a network, the most probable areas to experience damage are the network interface units of servers, workstations, and PC stations.

Installing Guidelines as per IS 2309

As per IS  - 2309:1989 following points to be taken under consideration while installing lightning Arrester:

1. Use to which the structure is put

2. Nature of its construction

3. Value of its contents or consequential effects

4. The locations of the structure and the height of the structure

5. The probability of a structure or building being struck by lightning in any one years is the product of the “Lightning Flash Density” and the “effective collection area” of the structure.
