What is Process Safety Management and How Important it is? – TheSafetyMaster™

Process safety management is the prevention of the release of substances that are defined as highly hazardous chemical during the operation of any process.

Process safety management   is a proactive method of assessing the risk and delivering suitable prevention methods to avoid risks related to release of hazardous chemicals during any process.

Process Hazard Types
The common types of hazards involved during a process due to release of highly hazardous chemicals can be,
  •            Toxicity
  •            Flammability
  •            Energy
  •        Reactivity

Toxicity is the degree to which a substance can damage an organism. The toxic level is high in highly hazardous chemicals and it possesses high risk.

Flammability is the ability of a substance to burn to ignite, causing fire or combustion. The probability of fire ignition is high during the release of highly hazardous chemicals.

Energies in the form of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, chemical, nuclear, thermal can harm people if initiated by highly hazardous chemicals during a process.

Reaction Hazards occur due to unwanted chemical reactions, these reactions may arise in case of process upsets, chemical interactions or material ingress.

Process Safety Management Method
During the process of Process Safety Management Audit by TheSafetyMaster™, we ensure the process safety at production units through PSM System. The aim is to minimize occupational risks and hazards for production floor workers by means of,

Ø   Identifying and correcting deficiencies in any Process Safety Management System
Ø   Effective Emergency Response Creation and Implementation
Ø   Mechanical Integrity Evaluation and Quality Assurance at a Contractor Level
Ø   Final Analysis of Process Equipment prior to first time use
Ø   Hazard Analysis and subsequent Corrective Measures

Process Safety Management Elements
The Process Safety Management is divided into 14 elements,

·         Process Safety Information
·         Process Hazard Analysis
·         Operating Procedures
·         Training
·         Contractors
·         Mechanical Integrity
·         Hot Work
·         Management of Change
·         Incident Investigation
·         Compliance Audits
·         Trade Secrets
·         Employee Participation
·         Pre-startup Safety Review
·         Emergency Planning and Response

These 14 elements are to be considered during implementation of the PSM system. Also, these elements are interconnected to one another and give a complete PSM system linked with elements one another.
